Canine Basic Training and Manners Class

I offer a positive, reward-based training class designed to show you how to effectively train your dog to perform behaviors that are used and needed every day.  By learning to properly communicate with your dog, s/he can become a loved and valued member of your family.  You will strengthen (or in some cases, develop) the bond you have with your dog, you will have a more well-mannered friend to share your life with, and you will have a pet that other people like to be around, as well as one that is welcome in public places.
You will be learning basics such as watch me, sit, down, stay, come here, loose-leash walking, and more.  The two of you will work as a team in a friendly, small-class environment using a non-threatening, non-abusive method of dog training based on the clicker training technique.

I encourage other members of your family, or anyone who has significant contact with your dog, to come along to class with you so that everyone is receiving the same instruction and information.  Consistency is one of the keys to success!
Also in class, we will problem-solve behavior issues that dogs are having at home.  Small changes in your behavior and home life can reap huge rewards relative to happily cohabitating with your canine companion.  Frequently, all people need is a little guidance, instruction, motivation, and structure to make this endeavor successful, as well as fun and rewarding for you and your dog!

Personal, one-on-one, private training help is also available with Jackie.

Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog Certification and AKC Title Prep Class

The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program was designed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.  Many people use the certification process as an introduction to competitive dog activities.  Interested handlers and their dogs must pass a test made up of ten behaviors before being awarded an AKC certificate.
Therapy dogs and their handlers provide comfort and companionship to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and wherever else therapy dogs are needed.  Sharing your dog with other people in their time of need is very rewarding for all involved.  Those desiring to do pet therapy work with Therapy Dogs International (TDI) must pass the 13-step evaluation in order to apply to be certified with TDI.
This class teaches and practices all components of the CGC and TDI tests to prepare handlers and their dogs for those tests, of which you can take one or both.
As of 1 January 2013, CGC is an official AKC title, which one can apply to receive for their dog following the passing of the CGC test.   AKC also recognizes working/active therapy dogs with the official AKC title of “THD,” following proper certification through AKC.
Prerequisites – Be able to demonstrate basic skills such as sit, down, stay, come here, and walking on a loose leash.  Dogs should naturally be of good temperament in the presence of other dogs, as well as other people/strangers.
The CGC and TDI test will be offered at Hippie Hounds following the 6-week class session for an additional fee.
Personal, one-on-one, private training help is also available with Jackie.

AKC Featured in the New York Times and NBC News

Is your dog a good neighbor? That’s what the New York Times and NBC Nightly Newsexplored in recent coverage featuring AKC’s Canine Good Citizen.

Renting an apartment or buying a house is a complicated process and becomes increasingly more complex for dog owners, the pieces said. If your dog has his Canine Good Citizen (CGC), however, you’ll find the process a little easier.

The benefits of the CGC program were detailed in both the New York Times article and NBC video. The Canine Good Citizen program is recognized as the gold standard for dog behavior. To earn their CGC title, dogs have to pass a 10 step test that includes items such as “accepting a friendly stranger” and “permitting grooming checks.”
